As I drove in my dodgey '92 model laser towards my boy's paddock I wondered what it would be like if animals could talk. Would they speak out against the abuse? Would battery hens confined to small cages call out in our tongue or would they stay quiet? Would the dogs used in fighting rings tell their owners that they don't think its OK? Would yearling racehorses tell their trainers that 'my body is still too young to travel at these speeds'? Recently in my country there has been a string of random acts of violence against animals. I find these accounts upsetting and maddening. I get angry to think that someone must kill or violently injure a defenseless animal to 'get a kick'. The first was a little maltease shihtzu who needed to be humanely euthanized after his owner found him in the backyard with one of his legs hacked off with a blunt object. The second, a stable of miniature ponies all killed in a nonsensical act of revenge. M
